Jillian and David’s elegant fall wedding began at the beautifully restored Hotel David Whitney, Autograph Collection, where they got ready before sharing a private first look from the hotel’s second-floor balcony. The Hotel David Whitney is one of our favorite places to get ready. It’s only a few minutes from the Gem Theatre, offers beautiful historic architecture, and the second-floor balcony creates a perfect location for a private first look.

Plan portrait time around downtown Detroit. The Detroit Institute of Arts and Cadillac Place are both nearby and provide two completely different architectural styles while keeping travel time short.

The Gem Theatre’s historic stage creates a beautiful ceremony backdrop. It photographs well from multiple angles and gives ceremonies an intimate feel without requiring much additional décor.

Leave plenty of time to enjoy your reception. One of our favorite moments from Jillian and David’s wedding happened unexpectedly when Sparty from Michigan State surprised everyone on the dance floor. Those unplanned moments often become the memories couples treasure most.

How much time should we plan for portraits?

FIf you’re planning portraits at multiple downtown Detroit locations, we typically recommend setting aside 45–75 minutes for portraits, plus additional travel time between locations. This allows plenty of time to enjoy each location without feeling rushed.
